Strategic Planning can Reduce Bengaluru's traffic Woes

Thursday, May 13, 2010

The garden city of the nation, is fast moving on the track of becoming the garbage city. The IT boom has turned out to be a boon and also a curse to the bangaloreans.Everyday i hear people saying 'Bangalore has gone from good to worse because of the IT sector', But they are the very same people who encourage their own children to get into IT and earn their living.

Let me stop complaining about the IT in Bangalore and say some of my plans for the banglore roads. The major component thats lacking today in the city is Planning. Yes, its true that unexpected population explosion, inefficient use of resources happened. But still i can see the lack of planning even today in Bangalore.

Me being a regular commuter on the Old Madras road, few days back i happened to experience one of the worst traffic jam's ever.Let me explain you a kinda solution for this problem using the images i have displayed here.

The junction from Ulsoor bus Depot which turn towards Ulsoor lake is always jammed.

As shown on the map the junctions looks like a triangle.Let us abstract it out to a plain view shown in the image below. The different colors indicate the different directions of the traffic flow. This kind of traffic arrangements requires the traffic police to maintain two signals, before the vehicles can move from ulsoor depot to ulsoor lake.
The picture below shows the current setup.Where there are two signals,we can see the abstract view of the current setup and how much problematic it is!!
With better planning they can actually eliminate both the traffic signals and create a free flow of traffic as shown in the map below.

The picture on the left is the new setup which i can suggest the traffic police to adopt...and theoretically we can see how much hassle free it can be.This can be the temporary solution to the old madras roads everyday traffic until the metro work finishes. The only negative part of this plan is tat the bus stand needs to be shifted. So a common man like me needs to walk some extra distance to catch his bus.But since already one side of the Ulsoor bus stand shifted to the other road, this wont be impossible.

But this 'solution', sorry again:) a 'work around' is theoretical, but until its actually employed and tried out, we never know whether it can work. According to me, this should smoothen the traffic flow, but with the bad roads, This can only assure to reduce 5-10 mins of your travel time on this road.

Finally what i wanted to say is Bangalore can be made a better place to commuters by proper planning. This might require the authorities to setup a proper planning committee.. but if there is already a planning committee, its better they include few people who usually use the roads and hence can reach to a better plan.

The BIG 10 Signal Free Rajajinagar corridor Approved

Friday, October 23, 2009

After a long delay the BBMP's first of its Signal free corridor work is ready to go.They say that first phase will start with the underpass near Okalipuram. This means that the trains have to take a new route, since the railway bridge will be brought down for time being. The Rajajinagar Corridor, which is a 5 km stretch between Okalipuram and Yeshwanthpur with six underpasses, will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 125 crore.

The six underpasses will come up at Vivekananda College Circle, 10th Cross rajajinagar, Navrang Theatre, Bridge Stone, Navrang Bar and Okalipuram Junction.

The first phase will comprise of the underpasses at 10th Cross ,Okalipuram Junction and vivekananada college. The underpasses are expected to be 31 meters wide. The first phase should be completed with a timespan of 8-10 months.

If this project completes then the traffic moving from majestic towards Yeshwantpur through the Rajkumar Road will be almost signal free. This will also reduce the signals at navrang theatre for people moving on MKK road. Which should ease the congestion on these roads due to Metro work.

Bengaluru Metro...

Friday, April 3, 2009

Oh.. bangalore is a fast growing city.. may not be in the right direction..
After the IT invasion on bangalore... there are lots of new trends... The old tradition has grown to mixture of cultures, Once called the city for retired people is now a hot spot on this globe... Its alive, and hot happening...
One such revolutionary changes happening currently is the construction of The Bengaluru Metro...

Any development project has its own advantages and disadvantages,
Similarly there have been a different views on this development project.
Few generations look at the growing population, increasing traffic density, Metro is a solution for all the problems. And now Metro project is on its track, moving towards its destination.
While few have there thoughts saying.. its the worst thing that ever could happen in bangalore,
Cutting through the heart lines of the city, uprooting all the green shade and displacing people from their homes, demolition of buildings, leading to a complete halt of the local business....
All these will lead to a new, but unpleasant future for this city. And surely cutting all the trees which were standing tall for ages, will lead to more pollution . Already this summer is very hot.

Well people say a lot about every development work hapening in the city. What i think is .. the work should be given a green signal if its well planned and designed to solve the problems for a longer term.

I believe in bangalore...
i would like to display few pictures of the proposed terminals for the metro in few areas of this city.. as below..

Freedom Park... A new tourism spot for Bangaloreans

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

For all the bangloreans...
A new attraction has been added to the list of tourist spots in Bangalore....

And this time its the new Freedom Park, a tribute to our freedom fighters...located in one of the oldest roads of Bangalore the Sheshadri road, in the old central jail premises. Actually they have remodeled the old jail to this new freedom park and at display are the dark days of freedom struggle and other sacrifices made by our freedom fighters.

The view from outside is simply beautiful, with the Asoka pillar at the entrance, and the blue radial wall like structure, it tends to attract anyone looking at it.

This park is built inside the high walls of the old central jail... It mixes the blend of the ancient jail structures trying to give a panoramic details of it.

It is said to have the essence of the barracks , old cells and other old structures inside it, there is a theater to stage drama's and also a place for rallies..

With the phase I of the structure complete ... they are stepping into the next phase and building
few more tourist attractions inside the premises.

This could be one of the additions to the museums in Bangalore actually after the Visvesvarya Technological museum's success. And this could be a new step in the study our history.. and a nice place to have your weekend planned.

This could also add to the heavy traffic on the Bangalores prime road.... leading to more road blocks, and traffic jams but since the work of the magic box ,in the maharani's circle this might go balanced...

Easiest way to reach the Freedom Park is by bus. Its less than one kilometer from the Bangalores KempeGowda Bus stand alias the Majestic.. just jump into any bus going towards corporation, get down at maharani college bus stop.

A note on the name...ಬೆಂದಕಾಳೂರು

Monday, February 16, 2009

Once the king of Hoysala Veera ballal II who came out for hunting expedition, lost the way in the forest... Finally after hours of searching he came to a place... he met a old woman. He was tired and hungry... the old woman served him with boiled beans ( benda kaalu in kannada ).
Thus the king gave the name of this place to be benda-kaal-uru.... ( ಬೆಂದಕಾಳೂರು)(the place of boiled beans )
This name today evolved into bengaluru and internationally famous as Bangalore...

These days people say that the city is deteriorating in its culture and geographical features, now the temperature is increasing because of pollution and global warming... thus they say that bangalore is becoming benda kaaluru.. again.. in the sense its burning

Welcome to BAng-Bangalore

INDIA>Karnataka>Bangalore [ˈbæŋgəloːɾ] ,

Bengaluru (Kannada: ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು,['beŋgəɭuːɾu]),

The capital of the Indian state of Karnataka
Its India's third most populous and fifth most populous urban agglomeration

Etymologically Bangalore is the anglicized version of the kannada word Bengaluru...
This history goes back to ages.. but the city came to official existence in 1537 when KempeGowda
Built a fort and made it a province of the Vijayanagar empire.

There are many more title's for this bangalore. Previously famous as garden city of India, Pensioners paradise of the world... is now the silicon valley of India and the IT capital.
Now its not only ahead in the computers, electronics, telecommunication, research... but these days it is also marked for its increasing crime rate, accidents and politics mishappenings and now also have added in the target list for the terrorist attacks...

Let me write about Bangalore and lets exploit each and every corner of the bangalore... in my future posts...
